Maho Beach

Found out about this yesterday after seeing a Josef Hoflehner photograph (the black-and-white one below) posted on A Time To Get. Admittedly, it's got planes, white sand tropical beaches, and girls in bikinis, so it was hard not to notice



The photo was taken at Maho Beach, a beach on St. Maarten in the Netherlands Antilles in the Carribean. I'll let Wikipedia do the rest:

The place is known worldwide because of the Princess Juliana International Airport that is situated immediately adjacent to the beach.
Incoming air traffic ... have to touch down as close as possible to the beginning of runway 10 due to the short runway length of 2,180 metres/7,152 ft,[1] resulting in low-flying aircraft on their final approach over the beach. Due to these low flying airplanes (including large passenger airliners such as the Boeing 747), the location is very popular with plane spotters.

The Modern Visions of Julius Shulman

The great architectural photographer Julius Shulman died this past week, at the age of 98. His photographs helped define the look and perception of modern architecture for most of the 20th century.



This photograph of Case Study House #22 by Pierre Koenig in 1960 helped to convince many Americans that Los Angeles was the city to plant their roots in. It remains Shulman's most iconic image.


The Kaufmann House by Richard Neutra in Palm Springs circa 1947. One of the most iconic houses of the 20th century with quite a storied history including once being owned by Barry Manilow who remodeled it to fit his decidedly unmodern tastes. As of May 2009, it was for sale for $13 million.

LIFE Archive

Google and Life Magazine have partnered to present the online archive to Life's wealth of photography.

There are astonishing full color photographs of WWII American troops in the Pacific Theater that give a new perspective to wartime.


I like this famous shot by photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt on VJ Day:


Not one to miss out on all the fun, Alfred tried his own version with himself as the guy grabbing a lady from the crowd. Check out the disapproving expression on the two old ladies in the background!


This one by Allan Grant of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly backstage at the Academy Awards in the 1950s is a beaute:

Artisance in Laguna Beach

Back in the summer, we decided to try and brave the crowds in downtown Laguna Beach. One of the stores we came across was Artisance. The boutique is off on a side road and not much larger than our apartment. It's owned by Angela Tesselaar who runs her design firm from the store as well. Most of the furniture and gifts have a sleek 1920-30s Deco vibe but still feel very modern. Some stuff appears to be vintage, but a lot of it is new. If you like Thomas O’Brien like I do, you'll love this place. I just wish my paycheck would allow me to love it more.

Artisance just updated their website, but back in the summer when I was googling them, I found Trever Hoehne’s website, who did all the photography. Here are a few of his amazing shots:

Mammoth Men

So I came across this blog on my lunch break. Ten guys, who happen to all be photographers, take a summer road trip up the California coast from Ventura to San Francisco. They have no particular set schedule, and actually let their blog readers vote on what activity they should do the next day. These guys look fun. Check out the Mammoth Men blog and also each guys own website. There's some great photographers in that group
